Take the Leap

Confidence building through outdoor pursuits

Take the Leap is our outdoor employability adventure programme centred around teamwork, leadership, confidence, trust and grit. Providing the opportunity to those who wouldn’t normally be able to access it, our outdoor adventures allow young people to get out of their comfort zone and develop key employability skills in a new environment, whilst taking part in new experiences. Students are able to learn about new skills and then immediately put them into practice; teamwork, relationship building, communication, all of these skills will be developed and tested in our unique employability adventure.

Whilst we run Take the Leap predominantly with schools, targeting disengaged pupils who face multiple challenges, we are also working with the NHS CAHMS service, using Rockinghorse funding, to provide opportunities for outpatients.

It was great to be involved in the Take the Leap interviews to see how the programme could positively impact the students and help them build confidence and address their fears in a proactive way. The interviewees were all thoroughly prepared and did really well during the interview!

We are delighted to be working with the LoveLocalJobs Foundation to send 14 of our Year 8 students to Snowdonia in September. This trip will provide them with experiences that simply can’t be offered in school. They will come away from their week in Wales with greater resilience, enhanced self-esteem, stronger bonds with their peers, and lifelong memories.

Perhaps the most telling impact was seen yesterday after school. One of the children who went on the trip was sitting on a bench after school, chatting to another child from the trip. One of the staff who went on the trip went to say hello, and to check they were alright. The response was great; they replied that they were fine, just chatting with their new friends. When asked, they said they didn’t know each other before the trip, and that many of them had been hanging out down the beach over the holidays. They had made some good friendships and were much happier in school as a result.

Wow, what a wonderful week! I cannot begin to explain how important this week has been to these students. Many of them were terrified of going away for a week and facing the unknown but they all achieved so much during their time at Dolawen. This is a week that they will never forget, and for some of them it was potentially life changing. We saw students who would barely raise their eyes to meet staff before they went, grow in confidence so much through their endeavours. There were tears and much laughter, and every one of the students faced their own fears and supported each other throughout the week. It was a true team effort. Their resilience was incredible and they should be very proud.

Andy and Bryn were fantastic instructors - they were calm, patient and highly professional with students who were sometimes really struggling with the challenges they faced. In a short space of time they managed to build such strong and trusting relationships with the students that their impact will be felt for a long time to come.

Thank you so much for the opportunity you have given these students. The students, parents and carers are so grateful to all of the people who made it possible.
